Growing Watercress in Pots or Containers: : Easy to Grow and Delicious!

Growing watercress in containers is an easier choice than growing it outdoors – commercial gardeners know how to maintain the water quality and freshness, which are considerably more difficult to do in an outdoor environment. However, you don’t really need a river or underground stream flowing through your garden to grow watercress.

Seeds

Watercress will often produce small amounts of seeds as they mature, so you can expect about ten seeds for every plant that is planted. When the young shoots begin to emerge, cut back on the amount of growing light that is being provided, and then water and fertilize the plant thoroughly.

As the watercress mature, you will notice that the shoots are becoming much denser, and this is when you will need to use the most fertilizer to support the growth. Learning how to grow watercress can sometimes require a bit of work and preparation.

It is important to consider your environment when you are preparing to grow the plants in the first place. In order to be able to grow healthy, delicious watercress, you will want to provide a good amount of sun, an adequate amount of water, and some type of food source for the young plants.

Container Types

There are two basic types of container growing: floating containers and anchored containers. Floating containers are used to grow several types of vegetables including kale, collard greens, kale and beets, cabbage, and many others.

These pots are planted inside a shallow layer of water, and they are usually covered with a plastic cover that serves as both shade and insulator for the roots.

When it comes to anchoring container plants, the basic idea is to build a sturdy base on which the plant will grow. For my herb growing I use this Full Depth Round Cylinder Pot. You can find it on Amazon.

However, the base is easily damaged if the roots are growing over the edges of the base. Ceramic is more reliable but is also fragile and easy to break.

It’s important to know the size of the container you want to grow in order to properly choose the container for growing. A small container will only house a single plant; larger containers require more room and will be best for multi-plant cultivation.

Keep in mind that growing watercress is only a hobby and you will not want to grow many them in the same pot if you’re growing them just for fun. It is important to have a sufficient amount of room, as well as access to a water source, for both growing and harvesting the plants.

Planting

After soil preparation, planting your watercress plant is next. The most effective method for planting your plant in an appropriate spot is to plant them about six inches away from the edge of the container. The center of the plant should be about six to twelve inches away from the soil surface.

A good rule of thumb is to plant the largest watercress plants one foot from the edge and the smallest plant at the center. Also, be aware that the leaves of your watercress will turn brown when they are submerged underwater for a few days.

Watering

Watering the plants regularly is very important for growing. A daily soak is good, although a weekly soak is even better. However, keep in mind that the amount you soak depends on the depth of water in the pot. The amount you soak the plant in may vary depending on the time of day and the availability of water.

You should soak the plant at least once every four to six weeks, but not more than two weeks. In general, watering a watercress tank once every two days is enough.

Harvesting

Once the leaves of your watercress have turned golden yellow and have started to decay, you can move onto the harvesting process. Remove the leaves by either flushing them with the hose or cutting them off with scissors.

After this, cut the stems at their base with scissors or a pair of scissors. Remove the root with pliers if the roots are damaged.

Storage

Now that your watercress is free of leaves and branches, the next step is to remove the stem with the help of a sharp knife and scoop out the roots and then rinse the root ball with water.

This removes any plant debris and dirt that have built up within the roots. Once you’ve cleaned up the roots, the next step is to cover the root ball with plastic wrap and place it in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.

How to Grow Watercress from Seed

Learning how to grow watercress can be fun, rewarding, and fun! There are several methods that you can use to grow this type of plant, but if you want to learn how to grow them from seed, here are a few guidelines for you to follow.

Seeds or Plants

When growing from seed, keep in mind that these plants will probably grow much slower than you would if you grew them from cuttings. Cuttings from a mature plant are usually much larger, so you can get a lot more from each plant.

When growing from seed, however, you’ll have to make sure that you buy the proper type of seed. You don’t want to plant too much, or the plant could begin to produce seedlings, which can be very unhealthy.

The first thing you do is sow your seeds into seed starter trays from between February to March. The soil temperature should be warmed up to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit. You can find both of these products on Amazon.

Make sure you use compost that holds some moisture but not soggy. Cover your seed starter tray with the provided plastic dome, and keep them warm with a temperature of 45-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once the seedlings are big enough to transplant, put them in 10″inch pots. Start to slowly get them used to being outdoors, for the first 2 weeks or until the risk of frost has passed.

After frost has passed you can leave them in pots or you can transplant the watercress into your garden.

Plant them at least 5-6″ apart from each other. This will give sufficient room for them to grow properly.

Location

Next, locate a shady, partially shady location in a well-drained stream or creeks and fill it with organic, composted dirt and water. Finally, plant your watercress in the ground and wait for them to grow up to maximum height before harvesting.

Sunlight

Seedlings need to get plenty of sunlight, it is important to provide them with as much sun as they can handle and preferably more than six hours daily.

Soil and Fertilization

Another important aspect that you will need to consider when you are learning how to grow these tasty treats is how to deal with diseases. Diseases are not usually caused by poor soil, but by poor nutrition. If you do not provide the necessary elements for your watercress to grow, you will only be putting yourself at risk.

A good organic soil mixture should be used in your planter. This soil is my favorite for herb growing. It’s available on Amazon.

I find this soil helps to promote proper growth, as well as make it easier for your plants to absorb nutrients that are available in their natural surroundings.

There are many nutrients that you can use that are already present in your garden. By using organic products, you will be eliminating the possibility of introducing harmful chemicals.

Pruning

Plants can be pruned at any stage to help them grow and to keep the plants healthy. When the plants are young, they are more likely to produce new shoots when they are young. You can also prune the plants if you want to. When the plants get older, you can remove the old shoots so that you can keep the new shoots.

When growing watercress from seed, you will want to mulch the plants to help retain moisture. This is the best way to prevent the roots from drying out. If you have a large plot of land, then it may be necessary to put in a compost layer. In a pinch, you could even put a layer of mulch in the beds.

Water Regularly

As mentioned before, if you are looking to learn how to grow these tasty treats, you will want to give them a lot of water. If the plants do not get enough water, they will start to die off.

If you notice that they are dying off, you will need to provide them with a solution that will flush out the plants so that new plants can grow. If you fail to do this, the leaves will just sit there and this can cause decay and fungus to take place on the roots of your plants.

Watering the plants should be done when the leaves start to turn yellow and green.

To help with that, you should keep watering on a regular basis. You can use a drip system to make sure that the leaves are still watered at the same time each day but you should never over water or allow the water to go directly onto the soil.

Proper Growing Conditions

It is important that you give your plants all the proper growing conditions. If you are growing them in the ground, you will need to ensure that you provide them with an adequate amount of sunshine and give them plenty of moisture. They will need both so that they can grow properly. Make sure to provide them with a healthy supply of food, as well.

If you are learning how to grow these plants, you will need to keep a close eye on the leaves of your plants. As you are growing them in containers, they may not show signs of the disease so you will not need to pay attention to them as much.

When they begin to change color, you will want to remove the plants from the containers immediately and plant them indoors. This will help prevent the infection from spreading throughout your entire garden.

One of the best ways to learn how to grow these plants is to read up on what is best for your specific plant. You will want to pay special attention to the leaves and the growth of the plants that you are growing.

As you grow more comfortable with the plant, you will start to see that they will change their growth pattern as well as they get used to it.
